Tennessee spring sports fans might see different tournament setups in a few years. The state’s sports governing body is reviewing changes after heavy rains messed up many games in 2026. While nothing will happen right away, discussions could lead to adjustments by 2028. The biggest issue was games getting delayed or moved at the last minute because fields turned to mud. One idea being floated is switching baseball and softball to single-elimination instead of double-elimination. Right now, teams that lose still get chances to come back, but that format takes more time. Officials worry about having enough sunny days to finish tournaments. Soccer and basketball already use single elimination without problems. The question is whether losing a chance to come back will bother teams more than dealing with rain delays.Another idea is changing how teams qualify for the state finals. Instead of everyone showing up at one big location, smaller groups might play earlier matches at different sites. This could help avoid the chaos of last year when some events had to be split up across multiple fields. Softball semifinals were even played in different cities because one field was underwater. The organization won’t rush into decisions. They still have a deal locked in for 2027, so any changes would wait until the next year. They’re also pushing for more artificial turf fields, especially for softball. Last spring, officials scrambled to find turf fields at the last minute after rain soaked other fields. Behind the scenes, school leaders will vote on what they think is best. Some might worry about added costs or extra travel time. Others might like the idea of shorter tournaments that finish on time.
