Planting Trees in the Right Places Can Cool the Planet

Tree planting is a big idea for fighting climate change. Scientists tested how different amounts and locations of new forests affect the Earth’s temperature using a detailed computer model. They looked at three scenarios with different sizes and spreads of reforestation. The results were clear: adding forests always cools the world a bit. The global temperature drop was between 0. 13 and 0. 25 degrees Celsius. This happens because trees absorb carbon dioxide, but they also change the Earth’s surface reflectivity (albedo) and water cycle. Those physical changes can warm some areas, offsetting part of the cooling.
Interestingly, a smaller plan can work just as well if it is placed wisely. A scheme that uses 450 million hectares less land still gives a similar overall cooling effect when the new forests are in strategic spots. The key is that planting trees near the equator cools those hot regions, while adding forests in higher latitudes can actually warm them because the ground reflects more sunlight. The pattern of where trees are planted also matters for distant places. The model showed that local changes can influence weather and ocean currents far away, creating a ripple effect on global temperatures. This means that where we grow trees matters as much as how many we plant. The study highlights the need for smart policies that consider both chemical and physical impacts of reforestation. By choosing the right locations, we can maximize cooling benefits and help keep the planet cooler.
