Poland’s Crypto Law Fight Continues

PolandSat Apr 18 2026
Polish lawmakers again could not lift a presidential veto that blocks an important crypto regulation bill, keeping the country in a prolonged debate about how to manage digital assets. The vote that took place on Friday required 263 approvals, but only 243 members of parliament voted against the veto while 191 supported it. The bill, which the prime minister champions, seeks to bring Poland in line with the European Union’s new Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. At present, Poland is the only EU member that has not adopted this framework. The president defended his veto by arguing that overly strict rules could hurt transparency and burden small businesses. In contrast, government officials warn that a lack of clear regulation exposes investors to risk. The finance minister has warned that the market could become a playground for fraudsters if rules remain unclear, putting both consumers and companies in danger.
This is the second time the government has failed to override a presidential veto on the same bill. The first rejection happened in December, after which lawmakers quickly introduced an “improved” version of the proposal. Critics say the new draft is almost identical to the original. The president again used his veto power in February, stating that a law he believes is wrong will not become valid simply because it has passed repeatedly. The dispute has drawn attention from the country’s largest crypto exchange, Zonda. The company claims it has been targeted unfairly by lawmakers and has alleged links to criminal networks, a claim that the exchange denies. Its chief executive said that involving the company in political conflicts harms Poland’s innovation scene and that he will take legal action to protect his rights. He also mentioned a large crypto wallet that remains inaccessible after the former CEO disappeared. The ongoing standoff shows how challenging it is for Poland to balance regulation with growth in the digital economy. The outcome of this debate will shape how safe and competitive the country’s crypto market becomes in the coming years.
