In Minneapolis, a standoff finally ended with the arrest of John Herbert Sawchak, a 54-year-old man charged with attempted murder. The case started when Sawchak allegedly shot his neighbor, Davis Moturi, who was trimming a tree. The incident sparked a political storm, with the Minneapolis City Council criticizing the police's response. The standoff began around 8:30 PM and lasted until 1:30 AM the next day. Police used various tactics, including negotiations and armored vehicles, to avoid using force against Sawchak, who was known to have weapons and knowledge of explosives.
The police chief, Brian O'Hara, explained that they aimed to handle the situation peacefully to protect both the community and the officers. Mayor Jacob Frey highlighted the danger of the situation, involving a mentally ill individual with access to firearms and explosives in a residential area. The standoff ended when Sawchak surrendered, avoiding the need for police to enter the house with gas. Davis Moturi, still in the hospital, feels let down by the police for not acting sooner on previous threats made by Sawchak.
