This: a simple cellular service worker, just doing his job, is suddenly confronted by a police officer yelling racial slurs. This isn't some tense drama movie, but a real event that unfolded in a quiet neighborhood recently. John Murphy, a 40-year-old detective from Rockville Centre, got upset when he saw a black subcontractor in his neighborhood. On November 3rd, Murphy allegedly went over to the worker, used the n-word, and even damaged the worker's SUV.
Murphy, who was off-duty at the time, started the confrontation by asking what the worker was doing in the area. He didn't even look at the worker's ID when it was offered. Instead, he allegedly got very angry and aggressive. He kicked the SUV, ripped off a light from the top, and even threw it, hitting the worker's face.
After the incident, Murphy was charged with a hate crime and criminal mischief. He also faced aggravated harassment charges. Murphy didn't talk to reporters after his court appearance. The district attorney, Raymond Tierney, criticized the incident, pointing out that the worker was just doing his job and shouldn't have been treated this way, especially by someone who is supposed to protect citizens.
Murphy's case will continue in court on December 3rd. For now, he has been ordered to stay away from the victim. His employer, the Rockville Centre Police Department, has also suspended him.
