As we celebrate 50 years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization, the quest to wipe out polio faces a big challenge – ensuring enough polio vaccines are available. Recent decades have seen great progress, but vaccine supply issues could reverse these gains. This examination, in line with the Immunization Agenda 2030 and the Global Polio Eradication Strategy, looks into holdup issues like supply disruptions and uncertain markets. Using data from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and expert insights, the study reveals key risks. These include the lack of a solid long-term plan for polio vaccination, no clear development roadmap for the vaccine, and poor long-term forecasting.
Better coordination among all involved in the vaccine supply, polio containment, and research, along with addressing financial hurdles, is needed. To keep polio eradication on track, a strong, flexible, and long-lasting approach to vaccine security is crucial. This is captured in the Polio Vaccine Security Framework. Policymakers, manufacturers, and stakeholders must join forces to keep the vaccine supply steady and safeguard half a century's worth of progress.
