The current political climate is as fiery as ever, and political discussions are becoming more frequent at work. According to a Gallup survey, 48% of US workers have recently engaged in political conversations with colleagues, while 38% have overheard them. But not all employees are at ease during these talks. Some feel included and even more connected with coworkers, while others experience discomfort or unfair treatment due to their political beliefs.
Interestingly, engaged workers are less likely to feel uneasy in such discussions, hinting that employee engagement might play a protective role in these interactions. Workplace experts recommend that leaders and employees proceed with caution when tackling sensitive issues to ensure that collaboration remains unaffected. Leaders, in particular, need to establish clear guidelines for these discussions and strictly adhere to them, avoiding any indication of their political leanings to prevent fostering a divisive 'us/them' mentality
