You might think that a politician would be careful about who endorses them, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. This time around, it was New York Congressman Marc Molinaro, who unwittingly shared a supportive video from someone known for spreading 9/11 conspiracy theories. Molinaro’s blunder happened when he posted a video of Alexandra Davis’ endorsement on October 10. Davis is an influencer who has stirred controversy for her beliefs about the 9/11 attacks. She has a following of over 24, 000 people on Instagram and often shares her views on the subject, which she calls “conspiracy realism. ”
The incident got tricky when Davis reposted a statement from a major general claiming that a missile, not a plane, hit the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. This contradicts the established fact that American Airlines Flight 77 was responsible for the damage. Davis also shared other dubious claims about the 9/11 attacks, suggesting that explosives were involved in the collapse of 7 World Trade Center. After the controversy surfaced, Molinaro’s campaign took swift action. They admitted they didn’t know about Davis’ conspiracy theories and quickly deleted the post. "She was a campaign supporter, and she sent us a video, " a campaign spokesperson explained. This event raises questions about the importance of vetting endorsements more carefully in the digital age. It’s not always easy to discern who might be promoting controversial beliefs. Davis couldn't be reached immediately for comment.
