In Portland, an empty lot once filled with trash and old parking spots is now a chance to build something new. A group of designers saw this lot, right next to a busy road and a park, as a perfect spot for homes and shared spaces. They believed it could bring people together and make the area better.
These designers know how to see potential in forgotten places. They think about how spaces can connect people and keep the character of the neighborhood. So, they drew a simple sketch showing homes around a shared public space. This idea started talks with the city and the community.
Over two years, they met with neighbors, listened to ideas, and faced challenges. Some people wanted more sports fields, while others wanted homes and community spaces. The designers had to explain their vision clearly and patiently.
One day, they saw their sketch hanging in a city office. It was a small but exciting moment, showing that their idea was part of the bigger conversation. Soon, the city asked for official plans, and the team worked hard to create a proposal.
The team talked to many neighbors, discussing growth, affordability, and how the city changes. Almost every talk ended with the same question: “What will the landscaping look like? ” This showed how important green spaces are to people.
Even though the team no longer lives near the lot, they are proud to have started this change. Between 2019 and 2025, many new homes were built in Portland, including the first cooperative housing models. This work has also inspired other towns in Maine.
Now, the focus is on designing homes that fit well with the neighborhood and reflect its spirit. Landscape architecture and placemaking are important but often not well understood. They can turn a simple sketch into real change.
