Astronauts wearing stylish, high-tech spacesuits designed by Prada and Axiom Space. These new suits are called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) and are planned for NASA's upcoming Artemis III mission. This mission aims to land humans on the moon for the first time since the 1970s. The announcement was made at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan.
"We've redefined spacesuit development, " said Matt Ondler, Axiom Space's president. The AxEMU suits offer improved safety, mobility, and performance. They are designed to keep astronauts safe and mobile both on the moon's surface and in orbit. Spacesuits must protect astronauts from the harsh conditions of space, including the lack of atmospheric pressure, extreme temperatures, and radiation.
Prada's involvement has added a touch of fashion and expertise in materials and sewing techniques. These suits are meant to fit both male and female astronauts comfortably. They feature specialized tools to handle the lunar south pole's extreme cold and can keep astronauts active for up to eight hours.
The suits are undergoing rigorous testing before the launch, expected in 2026. This collaboration aims to set a new model for cross-industry partnerships in space exploration. "We're pioneering a new era where partnerships drive innovation, " said Russell Ralston, Axiom Space's executive vice president.
