Prenatal Health: How Group Sessions Boost Fruit and Veggie Use

Fri Mar 13 2026
Pregnant Hispanic/Latino women were asked to join a program that helps keep their weight healthy. The study wanted to see if the way the sessions were run—either in a small group or one‑on‑one—and the type of advice given mattered for how many people actually used their vouchers to buy fruit and vegetables. Researchers found that when the counseling was delivered in a group setting, more women took advantage of the vouchers. The shared environment seemed to encourage participants to follow through on healthy eating tips more than when they received individualized coaching.
The group format also helped participants feel less isolated and gave them a chance to learn from others’ experiences. This social support may have made the idea of buying fresh produce feel more doable and less intimidating. Even though both formats offered the same basic information, the difference in how people received it turned out to be important. The study suggests that future prenatal programs should consider using group sessions to improve diet choices and overall health for expectant mothers.
