Rabies in Martin County: What You Need to Know
Martin County, FL, USATue Mar 17 2026
The Florida Department of Health is watching for rabies after two raccoons tested positive. The animals were found in Hobe Sound and Stuart between March 3 and March 9, 2026. The agency kept the details of each case private.
People living or visiting Martin County should stay away from wild animals. Raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes can carry the disease. Even a bite or scratch means you must see a doctor right away and report it.
Pets are at risk too. Keep dogs and cats on leashes or inside the house. Vaccinate them as recommended by a vet. If a wild animal attacks your pet, call a vet and then the county animal control at 772‑463‑3211.
Do not feed or lure wildlife with food or garbage. If you find a stray animal, contact animal control to remove it safely. Never adopt a wild animal; hand them over to a licensed rehabilitator instead.
If you think you were exposed, get treatment quickly. The right care can stop the virus from taking hold. For more tips and information, visit FloridaHealth. gov/Rabies or call 772‑221‑4000.
