Rain and River Chaos Leave Three Lives Lost in Southern Turkey
Turkey, AntakyaFri May 22 2026
The southern region of Turkey faced a deadly combination of rain and earth movement on Thursday, taking three lives. Local officials said the storm struck Hatay province, which had already suffered a major earthquake in 2023. Heavy showers caused the Asi River – also called the Orontes – to overflow, flooding fields and small villages. Roads and bridges were washed away, cutting off many residents.
A 15‑year‑old boy died when a house in Antakya collapsed during a landslide, the provincial governor confirmed. Another victim was a 66‑year‑old man whose car slipped into a ditch in the town of Defne. A third, a 62‑year‑old man, was swept away by the flood waters in the Samandag district. All three deaths were linked to the sudden and intense weather event.
The Interior Ministry issued warnings for 15 provinces, urging residents to stay alert. The flood damage extended over 2, 900 hectares of farmland, threatening the local economy and food supply. Emergency crews were still evaluating the full extent of the destruction.
Firefighters used boats to rescue many people who had abandoned their homes. Some residents tried to keep the water back with temporary barriers, but the sheer force of the flood made it difficult. The disaster teams are working to clear debris and restore basic services.
The tragedy highlights how climate‑related hazards can compound the aftermath of natural disasters. Communities that have already endured seismic shocks are now facing new challenges from extreme weather, underscoring the need for stronger preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
