For the first time in weeks, the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions are gearing up to receive much-needed rain. This rain event, although not a drought-ender, is a welcome relief for areas suffering from extreme fire weather and poor air quality. Firefighters battling dry conditions and winds will find some respite with the expected downpours. New Jersey, for instance, hasn't seen such severe drought conditions in 22 years.
The lack of rain has turned cities like Philadelphia into tinderboxes, with 42 days of dry conditions breaking records. This dry spell is fueling dangerous fires in New Jersey and New York, leading to unhealthy air alerts throughout the tri-state region. The anticipated rainfall is expected to total about half an inch across most of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic by Tuesday, with higher amounts in western Pennsylvania.
Meteorologists are cautioning that one rain event won't significantly reduce drought conditions. The National Weather Service advises continuing burn bans and water conservation efforts. The rain will start in the mid-Atlantic on Sunday evening and move to the Northeast by Sunday night, possibly lingering into the morning commute in cities like Boston and New York.
However, it's important to understand that while this rain is a good start, it won't be enough to end the drought. It's just the beginning of a longer process to combat the dry conditions.
