Raising Voices: A Community Call for Safer Births

Chicago, USASun May 10 2026
A quiet gathering at a South Side church turned into an urgent conversation about pregnancy and health. Expecting mothers, future moms, and their friends listened to a panel of doctors, midwives, and advocates who shared how to fight for safer births. The focus was on Black women, whose birth‑related death rate is more than triple that of white women. In 2024, the number was 44. 8 per 100 000 for Black women versus 14. 2 for white women. The panel spoke openly about the preventable causes behind these numbers. One speaker, a mother of two and social media influencer, said the high mortality rate is heartbreaking and wants to help change it. She urged listeners that giving birth should not be a risk. The event is part of a faith‑based nonprofit’s program that aims to close health gaps in underserved areas. Founded in 2008, the organization now works in Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Two sisters lead it after their mother’s passing earlier this year, keeping her mission alive through community events like the birth‑health panel.
One sister, who is pregnant herself, called the gathering a “full circle moment. ” She said carrying her mother’s torch means saving lives and helping neighbors. The other sister added a light‑hearted note, saying the work feels like family rooted in the community. Beyond birth education, the nonprofit has teamed with churches to host health fairs. These fairs offer screenings for HIV, blood pressure and mammograms. Since starting, the organization reports over 600 000 screenings, showing a real impact on community health. The event highlighted that change starts with knowledge and support. By sharing facts, offering resources and encouraging advocacy, the community takes steps toward safer pregnancies for all.
