Readers Leave Their Mark on an Early Science Book

United Kingdom, LondonFri May 08 2026
Researchers have taken a new look at a 17th‑century book about magnetism that first appeared in 1600. They didn’t just count how many copies survived; they also read the notes people wrote inside those books. By combining these two kinds of data, the team could see where readers stopped, highlighted passages, or wrote questions. The study found that most comments are concentrated in a few volumes. Those readers mainly used the book to navigate ships, but their questions also touched on stars and human nature.
Using digital tools, the scholars put together many copies of the book and traced its influence on early science. Their work shows how looking at readers’ interactions can reveal deeper stories about the history of knowledge and reading habits. The team also compiled an almost complete list of surviving editions, which will help other scholars who study early scientific texts. They argue that future projects should mix many copies, data analysis and close reading to gain richer insights into how people used books in the past.
