After the destructive fires that hit Los Angeles, Governor Gavin Newsom is planning a massive rebuilding project, calling it a "Marshall Plan" for the region. This plan aims to reimagine the city with input from various leaders, including those from the city, civic groups, businesses, nonprofits, and labor unions. Newsom stresses the need for speed and collaboration to get projects done quickly. He’s also worried about upcoming winter rains and their potential to cause flooding.
The rebuilding efforts are expected to align with the 2028 Olympics, which will be hosted in L. A. President Biden has promised six months of full federal disaster recovery relief, but the overall rebuilding process will take much longer. Newsom has issued an executive order to prevent fraud and speed up insurance claims for those who lost their homes. This order also keeps property tax assessments from increasing for those rebuilding their homes.
There’s been some controversy surrounding the cause of the fires. Former President Trump has blamed Newsom for not filling state reservoirs due to environmental concerns over the Delta smelt. Newsom denies this, stating that state reservoirs are full and that the misinformation is harmful. He has ordered an independent investigation to get to the bottom of these water supply issues.
Newsom believes that collaboration and empathy are key to overcoming this crisis. He has faith in the community and the leaders involved. However, he’s concerned about delays in federal aid due to threats from Trump. Despite these challenges, Newsom remains focused on working together to support those affected and move forward with rebuilding efforts.
