Recovery Time After Stroke: Where Patients Do Best

Mon Jun 08 2026
Stroke patients often need extra care to regain independence. Two common settings for this help are inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs) and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Researchers wanted to see which setting lets patients return home sooner, a sign that they are functioning well. They used data linked from an acute stroke registry to track patients’ journeys. The main measure was “home time, ” the number of days a patient spends at home after their hospital stay. More home time usually means better recovery and fewer complications. The study compared patients who went straight to IRFs with those sent to SNFs. It looked at many factors such as age, stroke severity, and prior health status. By controlling for these variables, the researchers aimed to isolate the effect of the care setting itself.
Results showed that patients treated in IRFs tended to have more home time than those in SNFs. The difference suggests that the intensive, specialized therapy offered at IRFs may accelerate functional gains. However, the study also noted that not all patients are suitable for IRFs; some may need the more gradual approach of an SNF. These findings can help doctors, families, and policymakers decide where to send stroke patients for the best possible outcome. Choosing the right facility could mean fewer readmissions and a quicker return to daily life.
