Red Sox Players Face New Injury Updates

The Red Sox team shared fresh injury news on Saturday. Triston Casas, a 26‑year‑old first baseman, has cleared a rib problem that surfaced after he was out of action earlier this week. He will start hitting off a tee on Monday, according to the team’s manager. The rib discomfort began when Casas swung his bat late last month. He was diagnosed with an intercostal strain, a type of muscle injury between the ribs. This is not the first time he has had rib issues; a torn rib cartilage in April 2024 kept him off the field for most of that season. Casas has had a tough time staying healthy. He began this year on the injured list while recovering from a serious knee injury in May 2025. If he returns to Boston next season, it is unclear where he will play. Willson Contreras, the current starting first baseman, hit a long home run in the opening game and is under contract through 2027 with an option for 2028.Casas mainly plays first base, although he once appeared at third in the minors years ago. On the pitching side, Johan Oviedo’s situation is less hopeful. He will meet with his Tommy John surgeon after a troubling arm issue that landed him on the injured list. The team labeled it a right elbow strain. Oviedo had Tommy John surgery in December 2023. During a relief appearance on March 30, Oviedo’s fastball slowed to 93 mph from his usual 95. 5 mph. He allowed six hits and four runs, including two home runs, in 3. 2 innings. After the game he said he felt fine and could not explain what happened. The next day, Oviedo woke up unable to bend his arm. He was placed on the injured list again. Other pitchers are also working toward rehab. Kutter Crawford, who missed all of 2025 after a wrist surgery, is moving toward minor‑league assignments. Patrick Sandoval, who has not pitched in the majors since 2024, will start a rehab stint with Double‑A Portland this Sunday.
