Religion’s Hidden Role in Building Happy, Healthy Communities
Provo, Utah, USA,Fri Jun 19 2026
A recent conference held at BYU brought forward fresh ideas about how religious groups shape society, even for those who do not practice faith themselves. One speaker, a researcher from the University of Pennsylvania, explained that his studies show churches and other congregations act as engines of economic growth and social well‑being. He highlighted that about 22 churches exist for every fast‑food outlet in the U. S. , a fact he used to illustrate how common these groups are.
The researcher emphasized that religion can reduce loneliness by providing frequent face‑to‑face interactions. He noted that nearly ninety percent of churches offer at least one service to people in need, helping to improve health, curb risky youth behavior, and boost local economies. In towns where the number of churches has fallen over time, he observed a corresponding drop in prosperity.
Another speaker, a law professor with two decades of experience working with the criminal justice system, focused on religion’s power to change lives. She pointed out that roughly five million Americans live under some form of correctional supervision and that about eighty‑two percent of released inmates are rearrested within ten years. Her research shows that faith communities can provide identity, belonging, purpose, and hope—factors that reduce recidivism.
She cited a qualitative study where most participants said that the supportive, loving environment of their faith community helped them transform. In a large review of over sixty thousand studies, the ratio of positive findings linking religion to mental health was about ten to one. When narrowing the focus to studies measuring happiness, hope, optimism, meaning, and life satisfaction, over ninety‑three percent reported positive results.
The overall message from both speakers is that religion offers a space where people can experience deep personal growth, community support, and long‑term happiness. Their research suggests that faith communities serve as essential pillars in creating more connected, prosperous, and mentally healthy societies.
