Remembering a Chicago Officer: A Community in Mourning
Chicago, USAFri May 08 2026
Chicago came together last week at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church to honor Officer John Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran who was killed in the line of duty. The visitation wasn’t just a gathering—it was a sea of blue ribbons tied to trees and lampposts, a sea of small flags fluttering in the wind, and a reminder of how much protection and sacrifice mean to this city. The church lawn hosted four officers on horseback until rain cut their tribute short, a small but powerful detail in the day’s events.
Inside, mourners wore pins bearing Bartholomew’s face, a simple but meaningful way to keep his memory alive. The crowd included local leaders like Mayor Brandon Johnson and U. S. Senator Dick Durbin, showing that Bartholomew’s loss touched more than just his neighborhood. Alderman Scott Waguespack later stressed that the city still has work to do in keeping officers safe, tying Bartholomew’s death to bigger questions about how Chicago protects those who protect it.
The shooting unfolded at a hospital where Bartholomew and his partner had taken a robbery suspect for evaluation. What should have been a routine medical visit turned deadly when the suspect, Alphanso Talley, allegedly pulled a hidden gun and opened fire. Talley’s arrest earlier that day was for armed robbery, and despite a search finding cash on him, no weapon was discovered. Prosecutors claim Talley swallowed drugs and was taken to the hospital with the gun tucked under a blanket—a detail that raises questions about security in medical settings. When Talley’s cuffs were removed for a scan, he allegedly used the moment to shoot Bartholomew and his partner, leaving Bartholomew dead and the other officer badly injured.
Talley now faces charges including murder and attempted murder, with his next court date set for May 20. The wounded officer survived but suffered serious injuries, a small relief in an otherwise tragic story. Funerals were held the next day at St. Andrew’s, giving the community one last chance to say goodbye before moving forward—though the questions linger.
