Teenager Rubi Patricia Vergara, a student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, sadly lost her life in a tragic shooting incident on Monday. She was just 14 years old. A fellow student, 15-year-old Natalie "Samantha" Rupnow, was the shooter, and she also took her own life at the scene. Another teacher, Erin West, 42, was also killed. Rubi, known for her gentle spirit and deep faith, was remembered fondly by loved ones at her funeral held at City Church, adjacent to the school.
Dawn Moris, a family friend, recounted Rubi’s unique talents and kindness. Rubi handcrafted gifts, showing her creativity and thoughtfulness. She made personalized birthday cards with digital artwork and origami, and even started crocheting. Moris displayed a small crocheted smiley face potato, a gift from Rubi, to the congregation. Moris said, "Rubi always applied her caring and creative nature to everything she did. "
Rubi was musically gifted too. She played keyboard in a family worship band and could quickly learn songs on the piano. Her beautiful voice was known for harmonizing, and she "sang like an angel, " Moris recalled. During the service, Rubi’s aunt played her favorite song, "Shoulders" by for King & Country, on the guitar.
The school community is still reeling from the tragedy. Two other students injured in the shooting remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Police are investigating the reasons behind Rupnow’s actions. They have found that she was in contact with a man in California who planned to attack a government building.
Rubi's uncle, Andy Remus, expressed gratitude to the Madison community for supporting the family during this difficult time. Despite the tragic loss, Rubi’s legacy of kindness and creativity will continue to inspire those who knew her.
