Rohingya Man’s Mysterious Death Sparks Legal and Public Debate
Upstate New York, Buffalo, USAMon Apr 13 2026
A 56‑year‑old Rohingya refugee from Myanmar, Nurul Amin Shah Alam, vanished on February 19 after being let out of the Erie County Holding Center in Buffalo. Border Patrol agents had released him into their care, dropping him off alone at a closed Tim Hortons nearby. Five days later, his body was discovered about four miles away in cold conditions.
Shah Alam had been held because of a 2025 incident that his family says was a misunderstanding. He was supposed to stay in custody until March 24, but bail was posted on February 19. Border Patrol arrived at the holding center before he left, and officials claim they had no responsibility for what happened afterward.
An autopsy revealed that Shah Alam died from a ruptured stress ulcer, caused by severe cold and dehydration. Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale R. Burstein explained that the rupture was a medical emergency and would have produced extreme pain. She also noted that labeling a death as homicide means it resulted from another person’s actions or inactions, not necessarily intent to harm. The courts will decide if a crime was committed.
U. S. Customs and Border Protection stated it had no role in the death, saying Shah Alam died about a week after his release. The agency warned that media and politicians sometimes spread false narratives to undermine law enforcement, claiming the incident had nothing to do with Border Patrol. They did not confirm whether Shah Alam’s family was informed before his release.
The Erie County District Attorney is requesting the autopsy report for further inquiry. New York Attorney General Letitia James announced her office would also review the case. Governor Kathy Hochul said she wants Shah Alam’s family to be able to sue the federal government in state court and emphasized that everyone involved should be held fully accountable.
