Russia Gains Cash While Oil Prices Soar
RussiaWed Mar 18 2026
Russia has seen a sudden rise in money from selling oil, thanks to U. S. sanctions easing and price spikes caused by the Iran conflict. The U. S. Treasury allowed a short‑term pause on sanctions for Russian oil already loaded onto ships, hoping to keep the market steady. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this move was small and temporary, but many analysts argue it is a major boost for Moscow.
Experts say the pause removed a 10‑20% price cut that Russian crude had been trading at, bringing it up to the same level as Brent oil. This change has encouraged buyers like China, Brazil and Singapore to buy more Russian crude. For example, China’s imports jumped 22%, Brazil’s rose 32% and Singapore’s almost tripled.
Data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air shows Russia earned an estimated $230 million a day in the first two weeks of the Iran war—about 26% more than before. Kremlin officials have openly acknowledged these extra profits, linking them to higher company and budget revenues.
The U. S. also lifted a 30‑day ban on Indian refiners buying Russian oil, reversing last year’s tariff. India is the second‑largest buyer of Russian fuels, so this shift could further lift Russia’s earnings.
Ukraine’s president warned that the extra money might embolden Putin to keep fighting. He estimated Russia could have lost over $100 billion in 2026 due to sanctions, but now has made about $10 billion in just two weeks of the Iran war.
Some officials, like CIA Director John Ratcliffe, said they would not calculate the exact benefits for Russia. Political scientist Ian Bremmer cautioned that even if Russia earns more money, it may not change the outcome of its war in Ukraine. He noted that Russia has already suffered heavy casualties and economic hardship.
The situation shows how global conflicts can create unintended financial gains for some countries, even as others suffer from sanctions and price hikes. It also highlights the complex balance policymakers must strike between protecting their own interests and avoiding benefits to adversaries.
