Russian grain ship rescued after fire at sea
Sea of Azov, Crimean Peninsula, Rostov, RussiaTue Apr 07 2026
Early last week, a cargo ship loaded with wheat came under attack in the Sea of Azov. Ukrainian drones reportedly struck the vessel, setting it ablaze and causing it to sink partially. The event was caught on video, showing thick smoke rising from the stricken ship. Rescue crews later found it and towed it to a nearby village for repairs. Sadly, three crew members were killed in the fire.
The ship was carrying grain from a port near Rostov to another port where larger ships wait to export it. Experts say this route is one of the busiest for grain trading between Russia and other countries. The attack came at a time when tensions are already high in the region. Some analysts believe this could make food supply problems worse worldwide.
Public records show similar ships weigh around 3, 165 tons when fully loaded. This incident stands out because it’s the first time a grain ship has been sunk in this area since the war started in 2022. Analysts warn that with conflicts spreading, the risks of more disruptions are growing.
