Russia's Arctic: A Shrinking Population, a Growing Need

In the vast Arctic region, Russia stands out due to its unique geopolitical position. With the country's increasing interest in developing these northern territories, one major challenge is brewing: how to keep people living there and ensure there are enough workers for future projects. The problem is real – numbers show that the population in these regions is dropping. While other Arctic nations have seen seasonal workers, Russia has traditionally had people living there permanently. But that's changing fast. By 2018, experts predict a significant labor shortage in these areas.The focus of this study? Mурманск Oblast. It's one of the most urbanized and densely populated regions in Russian Arctic. However, it's also seeing the fastest population decline, especially among the young. Why? Young people are moving away because of limited job opportunities and socialization issues. Research from 2008 to 2016 revealed that many youth have firm plans to leave. It's a critical issue that needs addressing.
