Firearm violence and substance abuse are major issues affecting young Black men in the United States. They are 24 times more likely to face firearm injuries and homicides, yet they often struggle to access care and support. Traditional programs mostly focus on dealing with violence after it happens, and many young men disengage from these services. To tackle this problem, a new app called BrotherlyACT was created. This app is designed by nurses and tailored to the culture of young Black men aged 15-24. It aims to prevent firearm violence and improve mental health access in high-risk, low-resource areas.
The app uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to teach life skills and safety planning. It also offers AI-driven talk therapy and connects users to local services based on their zip code. By bringing these resources directly to young men at risk, the app hopes to make a real difference in their lives.
