Lake Saimaa in Finland is home to a unique group of ringed seals. These seals are facing a silent threat. The water they live in is polluted with harmful chemicals. These chemicals are called perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS). PFOS is part of a larger group of chemicals known as PFAS. PFAS are man-made and very persistent in the environment. They do not break down easily. This makes them a big problem for wildlife.
Scientists studied PFOS levels in the tissues of both adult and baby seals. They found high concentrations of PFOS in the liver of all seals. Surprisingly, they also found high levels in the kidneys of baby seals. This is concerning because it shows that even the youngest seals are affected.
The scientists also looked at the fish that seals eat. They found that the fish have very high levels of PFOS. The levels are so high that they exceed safe limits. This means that seals are eating too much PFOS. It could be making them sick.
But PFOS is not the only problem. The fish in Lake Saimaa also have a mix of other PFAS chemicals. This mix could be even more harmful than PFOS alone. The scientists are worried. They think that the pollution in Lake Saimaa could be seriously harming the seals.
