Seattle's mayor, Katie Wilson, is under fire for a recent photo shared on her official X account. The image shows her with two people, one holding a sign that reads, "Nazis own flammable cars. " Critics say the word "Nazi" is always a bad idea, no matter the context.
Some think Wilson should have been more careful. "The word 'Nazi' carries a lot of baggage, " said one political analyst. "It's a word that can spark strong reactions, and public figures should be mindful of that. "
Others say it's not a big deal. "I don't think she was trying to endorse any violent or destructive behavior, " said a local political consultant. "Public figures often get photographed with people they don't know well at events. "
Wilson's past as a socialist and her previous support for defunding the police have made some people suspicious of her current views. But she has said she no longer supports some of those old ideas. "She's clear that she's not a socialist in the way she used to be, " said the consultant.
The mayor's office said she won't comment on the photo. Instead, they pointed to the city's bigger issues, like homelessness and affordability. "She's focused on the real problems facing our city, " they said.
But some say she should still address the photo. "She should explain what she thinks about the sign, " said the analyst. "Even if she didn't notice it at the time, now that it's been brought to her attention, she should say something. "
In the photo, Wilson was at an anti-ICE protest. She wrote on X that she was there to "grieve for those who have lost their lives to ICE" and to "organize to make Seattle a safer place for everyone. "
