Are you ready to see something amazing this weekend? The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, might light up the skies over Northern California. Usually, these colorful lights are seen near the North Pole, but they sometimes travel south. This could happen on Friday night into Saturday morning and again on Saturday night into Sunday evening.
Why is this happening? The sun sent out some material called coronal mass ejections. These can cause something called geomagnetic storms when they reach Earth. These storms make the Northern Lights visible. Scientists measure these storms from G1 to G5, with G5 being the strongest.
Shawn Dahl from the Space Weather Prediction Center says there's a chance of seeing the lights on Friday night and Saturday night. But the best time might be Sunday morning when the stronger coronal mass ejection hits Earth. Gerald McKeegan from Chabot Space & Science Center agrees, saying we might see something in far Northern California.
Even if you don't see them with your eyes, you might capture them with a camera. Sometimes people in Northern California only see the lights through their cameras.
The Northern Lights won't be as bright this weekend as they were in May when there was a G5 storm. But it's still an exciting chance to see something special!
