A sewage leak at Glen Burnie's Gatewater Landing apartments has led to the closure of a section of Marley Creek for an entire week.
The Anne Arundel County Department of Health announced the waterway closure on Monday, prohibiting direct water contact and water sports between Brewers Island and Marley Creek Drive.
The pump failure at the apartment complex is believed to be the source of the leak, but the exact volume of the spill remains uncertain. Don Curtian, the county's director of environmental health, stated that the apartment complex management is unable to determine how long the pump was inactive, leaving health officials to plan for the worst-case scenario of up to 10,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the creek.
The Department of Health took swift action to ensure swimmers' safety by closing the affected area of area of Marley Creek.
