Short‑Term Rentals in New Franklin: A New Rule and Mixed Feelings
New Franklin Ohio USA,Thu Mar 26 2026
New Franklin City Council has just passed a new rule about renting homes for less than 30 days. The law says that any such rental must be at least 300 feet away from another short‑term rental. The vote was close, with four council members in favor and three against.
The rule was debated for months. Some councilors felt it would help keep neighborhoods calm, especially near the lake. Others argued that the distance requirement is unfair and could stop people from using their own homes for short‑term stays. One council member pointed out that the rule only affects certain owners, not all property owners.
One opponent said he had never seen serious problems with short‑term rentals in the last two decades. He also worried that the 300‑foot rule could make it hard for people to rent out their houses if they are close together. He showed a map of his own street to illustrate how the rule could block many potential rentals.
A council member who supports the rule said it would protect the character of neighborhoods. He believes that a balance is needed between people who want to rent out their homes and those who live nearby. Another council member added that without a distance rule, one owner could buy several houses next to each other and turn them all into rentals.
The council also approved an extension of the city’s trash and recycling service contract. The new agreement will last five years, with a small price increase each year. The mayor said the city got a good deal because it keeps rates stable for a long time.
During the meeting, department heads gave updates on their work. The council also celebrated local achievements, such as a state wrestling champion and a resident’s 102nd birthday. Finally, the council approved several other projects, including road resurfacing and sewer work.
The next city meeting will be on April 1. It will start at 6 p. m. and can be watched online.
