A former minister in Singapore has been sent to prison for a year. His name is S. Iswaran, he's 62 years old, and he used to be part of the cabinet for 13 years. The court found him guilty of taking expensive gifts worth over $300,000 and obstructing justice. This is a big deal because Singapore is known for its honest government and low corruption rates.
Iswaran admitted to accepting gifts like soccer match tickets, private jet rides, and more. He's going to jail on Monday but can stay out on bail until then. The case started with 35 charges, but only five were brought to court. Two of those were about corruption, but they were changed to receiving gift charges.
This is the first time in a long time that a minister in Singapore has gone to jail for such things. The last time was in 1986, when the national development minister had issues with bribery but died before any charges were filed.
People are surprised because Singapore usually has very clean governance. It's even one of the top five least corrupt countries in the world, according to a corruption tracker called Transparency International. So, this case is making people think about how fair and honest the government really is.
