Skokie residents to vote on $53 million park upgrades

Skokie, Illinois, USASat Jun 06 2026
Skokie is considering letting voters decide in November whether to support a $53 million bond issue for new parks and upgrades. The plan includes creating Channelside Park South on an old industrial site and expanding Sports Park East with better sports fields and facilities. If passed, property taxes would go up slightly for residents, depending on their home value. The district suggests ways to soften the tax increase. Long-time homeowners, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities could qualify for lower tax bills. Residents can check their estimated costs using the district’s online tool. While the tax hike starts in 2027, the district says the benefits—like new playgrounds, walking paths, and sports lighting—could last decades. Not everyone may be thrilled about the tax increase. But the district argues Skokie falls short in park space compared to national standards. With over 60, 000 residents spread across multiple towns, open recreational areas are in high demand. Past surveys show people want better walking trails, safer playgrounds, and more sports options.
The upgrades aren’t just about fun. Sports Park East is one of the busiest parks in the area, and adding lighting means more evening use. Channelside Park South would turn a vacant lot into a community hub with a playground, bike paths, and event spaces. A bridge over the North Shore Channel would connect it to other parks, making it easier to move around. Timing plays a role too. The district had delayed upgrades because a nearby water treatment plant was expanding. Now that plans have changed, the space is free for new development. Construction could start as early as 2027 if voters approve. Public meetings on June 6 and 7 will let residents ask questions before the board decides in July whether to put the issue on the ballot. The district says the projects reflect years of community feedback. But in the end, it’s up to voters to decide if the cost is worth it.
