A skunk that was discovered dead near the Arkansas River and Pueblo Boulevard tested positive for avian influenza, according to local health officials. The disease usually spreads among birds but can also affect other animals and, in rare cases, people who handle infected creatures. The department urged residents to avoid touching wild animals and to keep pets away from wildlife or carcasses.
People can get sick by direct contact with infected animals or through surfaces contaminated with their saliva, mucus or feces. The health office recommends using gloves, masks and eye protection when handling sick or dead birds, poultry or other wildlife. If anyone feels ill after such exposure, they should seek medical help promptly.
Typical symptoms of the virus include eye irritation, cough, nasal congestion, body aches, headaches, breathing difficulties and a fever above 100°F. The message is clear: stay safe by keeping distance from wild animals and protecting yourself if contact occurs.
