Get ready for a celestial show! The Draconid meteor shower is set to light up the night sky. Unlike other meteor showers, this one's a bit sleepier but still exciting. You don’t need any special gear, just your eyes and a clear view of the sky.
While it might not produce as many meteors as bigger showers like the Perseids or Geminids, the Draconids have their own charm. They can surprise us with something called a meteor storm – hundreds or even thousands of meteors per hour! That happened in 1933 and 1946, and European sky-gazers saw over 600 meteors per hour in 2011.
The best time to watch is when it’s dark, so find a spot away from city lights if you can. A reclining chair or just lying down on the ground gives you a great view. Don't forget your camera – meteor showers are perfect for time-lapse videos and long exposure shots!
If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, you might have to wait until it gets really dark because the Draco constellation doesn’t rise high there. But it's still worth a look!
The next full moon is coming up on October 17 – it’s a supermoon and will be the closest of the year. And get ready, because after that, we have a busy meteor shower season ahead! There are more showers happening later this year and into 2024.
