Scientists found that deep sleep might help older adults with early signs of Alzheimer's keep their memory sharp. A study with 62 healthy older folks showed that those with brain changes linked to Alzheimer's did better on memory tests when they got more deep sleep. This benefit was seen even when other factors like education and activity were accounted for. The researchers think deep sleep could act like a lifeline, keeping memory strong against the tide of Alzheimer's. They believe improving sleep could be a way to fight back against dementia.
This study builds on past research that found poor sleep and high levels of amyloid-beta proteins in the brain can go hand in hand. But it's not clear if poor sleep causes Alzheimer's or just shows up as a symptom. Still, many scientists use amyloid-beta levels to spot Alzheimer's early. The research team found that when older adults had high amyloid-beta levels, getting good deep sleep made a big difference in their memory.
This study is small, but it suggests that sleep quality is key. It also hints that natural sleep might be better than pills, which can lead to shallow sleep. To sleep well, the researchers suggest avoiding late-night coffee, exercising, skipping screens before bed, and taking a hot shower.
