A tiny piece of plastic, so small you can't even see it with your eyes. These are nanoplastics, and they're a big problem in our waterways. A recent study looked at what happens when zebrafish swim in water filled with these tiny plastics for just 96 hours.
In males, the tiny plastics messed with the testicles, causing abnormal clumps of sperm and packing problems. The sperm could still fertilize eggs, but they weren't as good at swimming. For females, the plastics seemed to mess with the growth stages of their eggs.
When scientists dug deeper, they found that the plastics had changed how certain genes worked in the testes. These genes are important for keeping DNA in good shape and making sure sperm meets eggs. Even worse, the plastics had managed to get past protective barriers and into the cells where new sperm and eggs are made.
This study shows that even a short exposure to nanoplastics can hurt how well animals reproduce. It also tells us about the molecular paths these plastics can mess with.
