Electronics keep shrinking but they still need protection from unwanted radio waves. Old-school metal shields work fine, but they’re heavy and can’t adapt. A new approach uses two kinds of fields—electric and magnetic—to line up tiny flakes and wires inside a lightweight foam. Rotate the foam and suddenly it blocks signals; rotate it back and the signals pass through. No extra circuits, no moving parts.
What makes this foam special is the mix of reduced graphene oxide flakes and nickel nanowires baked into a spongy plastic called polyimide. When the team lines these fillers up at right angles, the foam starts acting like a switch. In lab tests it cut out more than 99. 99999% of incoming waves across huge frequency ranges, from gigahertz to terahertz. Even in boiling water or super-cold liquid nitrogen the performance stayed rock solid.
Behind the scenes, computer models show how the exact angles between flakes and wires decide how well the foam blocks signals. Tune that angle and you tune the protection level instantly. The same trick could soon appear in space suits, aircraft wiring, or even foldable gadgets we wear every day.
