For many travelers heading to Northern California’s ski spots, a winter storm watch is in place as the holiday weekend approaches.
Officials from the National Weather Service warn that people moving through and out of the Sierra Nevada can expect major travel delays and advise extreme caution.
Fortunately, there is still a chance to reach destinations before the storm hits hard. A meteorologist from Sacramento said Saturday and early Sunday morning will offer the best window for safe travel.
While some snow fell earlier in the week, conditions remain mild on Saturday. The forecast predicts a sharp uptick after noon on Sunday, especially in towns at 3, 000 to 4, 000 feet above sea level.
Those communities could see between one and two feet of new snow, with heavier amounts likely in more remote or less populated areas. Even populated towns may experience significant accumulation.
Higher elevations could receive up to six or eight feet of snow. For example, Blue Canyon—an unincorporated area 4, 695 feet above sea level and roughly 51 miles west of Lake Tahoe—may be hit hard.
The storm is expected to linger for several days and could affect parts of Western Nevada and Southern Oregon as well.
