South Korea pushes for US-North Korea talks after Trump photos surface

South Korea, SeoulWed Jun 17 2026
South Korea's president recently had a quick chat with Donald Trump at a big world leaders' meeting. He asked Trump to step up as the main player in solving tensions with North Korea. The short conversation happened during a group photo session. Trump then asked about the current state of play with North Korea. The South Korean leader reminded Trump about his past role in handling Middle East conflicts peacefully and asked him to take similar action now.
Trump agreed to look into the North Korea issue further. The two leaders have a history of meetings with North Korea's Kim Jong Un. They first met in Singapore back in 2018, then again in Hanoi in 2019. A third meeting happened later that year at the Korean border. Trump even became the first sitting US president to step into North Korea during that visit. Their diplomacy hit a wall after the Hanoi meeting didn’t result in any agreement about North Korea’s nuclear program or sanctions relief. Despite this, Trump has shown interest in restarting direct talks with Kim. In August 2025, he mentioned looking forward to meeting Kim again someday. Just a couple of months later, he posted a mysterious photo with Kim on his social media platform, seemingly dropping a hint about future discussions.
