South Korea Rules Out Iran in Hormuz Ship Attack
Strait of HormuzThu May 14 2026
The South Korean government says it is very unlikely that any country other than Iran was behind the attack on a Korean cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz. A senior official from Seoul’s foreign ministry told reporters that they are carefully reviewing intelligence supplied by the United States. The incident happened on May 4 and involved a South Korean vessel owned by HMM, named Namu. The ship suffered a fire and damage to the lower part of its hull.
The Korean authorities are working with U. S. investigators to piece together what happened. They plan to present their findings so that Iran can respond appropriately. The foreign ministry could not confirm the comments right away, but it confirmed that expert teams have already traveled to Dubai. There, the Namu is being examined before repairs can begin.
Iran has denied any role in the attack. The ship’s side was struck hard, but Iran has not offered an explanation and remains silent while South Korea continues its probe. Earlier in the day, U. S. President Donald Trump claimed that Iran had fired at the Korean vessel and urged Seoul to join a U. S. -led effort to keep shipping safe through the strait.
The investigation is still in its early stages. South Korea’s foreign ministry will share more information once the evidence is fully analyzed. The incident highlights how tensions in the region can quickly affect international shipping routes.
