South Shore Athletes Shine in Recent High School Sports Events

The Calcano Da Silva brothers made history at the MIAA Division 5 track championships. Nathan Calcano Da Silva broke a meet record in the 300 meters, finishing in 34. 56 seconds. His brother, Aiden, was close behind, securing second place with a time of 34. 98 seconds. Aiden also earned a third-place finish in the 55 hurdles, clocking in at 7. 84 seconds. On the girls' side, Carver High School stood out, finishing in seventh place as a team. Hazel Butterworth from Carver had impressive performances, taking third in the mile with a time of 5:13 and fifth in the two-mile run at 11:49. Emma Wall from Carver won the high jump, tying a meet record with a leap of 5-4. Her teammate Carly Peterson finished fifth in the same event. Nolan Kenneally from Carver also had a strong showing, placing second in the high jump with a jump of 6-2. Other notable performances included Benjamin Levesque from East Bridgewater, who finished fifth in the mile. Norwell's John Doherty secured fifth place in the 1, 000-meter run. Isabella Bright from East Bridgewater took fourth in the 55 hurdles, and Abington's Samaya Harrison finished second in the shot put.
In swimming and diving, Hingham/Cohasset had the best team performance at the Division 1 championships, finishing 16th with 51 points. Marshfield/Hanover was close behind, securing 18th place with 47 points. Ashley Wagner from Hingham/Cohasset had a strong showing, placing ninth in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. The 400 freestyle relay team from Hingham/Cohasset, consisting of Wagner, Emma Izmirlic, Amelia Byrne, and Ella Cignetti, also placed ninth. Anna Tocchio from Marshfield/Hanover finished seventh in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke. In girls' hockey, Maddie Cantor from Norwell/Scituate/Abington had an impressive game, scoring two goals and assisting on two others, including her 101st career point, in an 8-2 victory over Plymouth. Caroline Gibbons scored two goals, and Natasha Minkus had a goal and three assists. Shae McCarthy scored her first varsity goal. Milton improved to 18-1-1 with a 2-1 overtime win over Malden Catholic, thanks to a pair of goals from Sabrina Stone and outstanding goaltending from Caera Hart. Vivienne Somers recorded a 39-save shutout as Hanover defeated Plymouth, 1-0, with Olivia McCormick scoring the lone goal. In boys' hockey, Aden Zaza and Jake McSweeney scored goals for Stoughton/Brockton in an 8-2 loss to Taunton. In girls' basketball, Bridgewater-Raynham secured its 12th consecutive state tournament spot with a 51-41 win over Newton South. Camden Strandberg had a double-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks, while Lily Polansky contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Braintree's Frankie Mazzini scored 12 points in a narrow 51-50 loss to Woburn.
