Southern California is in for a stormy Christmas week. A powerful weather system, known as the Pineapple Express, is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds. This could lead to mudslides, fallen trees, and flooding in homes and on freeways. The worst of the storm is expected from Tuesday to Thursday. There's a high chance of rain in Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties. Orange County, the Inland Empire, and San Diego County might see lighter showers on Tuesday, with heavier rain on Wednesday.
Forecasters warn of a 40% chance of very heavy rain in some areas. This could mean 4 or more inches of rain on the coast and in the valleys, and up to 8 inches in the mountains. Such heavy rain could cause significant mudslides, flooded freeways, and even dangerous sea conditions. There's also a risk of strong winds. These could topple trees and power lines. In some areas, wind gusts could reach up to 53 mph. People are advised to avoid parking under trees and to secure loose outdoor objects. This storm could make this one of the wettest Christmases in recent memory. The last time downtown Los Angeles saw this much rain over Christmas was in 1971. So, it's important for residents to stay alert and prepared.
