SpaceX has just pushed back the launch of the Crew-10 mission from February to late March. Why? A new Crew Dragon is taking longer than expected to get ready. This means astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) will stay up there for an extra month, including two who've been there since June. NASA's commercial crew program manager, Steve Stich, says building a spacecraft is a detailed job that needs time. SpaceX's Sarah Walker had earlier said the new Dragon was almost done, but now it's expected to reach Florida in January.
NASA considered other options, like using a different spacecraft or changing the mission plan, but decided a delay was best. The Crew-10 crew includes NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. This delay also extends the ISS stay of the Crew-9 astronauts, who were originally supposed to come back in April. So, what does this mean? Astronauts will spend more time in space, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it.
