Spain is grappling with its worst flooding in decades, with a year's worth of rain falling in just hours this week. The storm, starting on Tuesday, has claimed over 150 lives, mostly in the Valencia region. Towns and roads are flooded, rivers have burst their banks, and thousands are without power or water. Emergency workers are battling to rescue trapped people and recover bodies. The east and south of Spain often see autumn rain, but this year’s downpour was unprecedented. Valencia, a tourist hotspot, saw rural villages submerged and main highways rendered unusable. A courthouse in the regional capital was turned into a temporary morgue. In Utiel, one of the worst-hit towns, residents are cleaning up and dealing with the emotional toll.
“My father, who is almost 100, has never seen anything like this, ” said José Platero, a Utiel resident. “We found him looking for personal belongings near his home. ” Similar scenes played out across Valencia, with people using brooms to clear muddy water from their homes. Flooding was also reported in Murcia and Malaga. In Malaga, a British man died from hypothermia. Survivors felt powerless, losing almost everything in half an hour. Some criticized the government's alert system, claiming they didn’t receive warnings until the flooding was already happening. The Spanish military has deployed over 1, 000 members for rescue efforts. The government has also sent emergency alerts and decreed three days of official mourning. Despite warnings, many were caught off guard, highlighting the failure of the regional alert system. Scientists suggest that climate change makes such extreme rainfall events more likely and intense. The high death toll indicates a systemic failure in alerting and protecting people.
