People from many different religions came together to talk about something important. They don't all believe the same things or follow the same rules. But they do agree on one thing: everyone should be able to show their faith in public without fear.
Recently, there was a terrible attack on Jewish people at Bondi Beach. They were targeted just because they were celebrating their religion. This kind of hate crime is not just an attack on their beliefs. It's an attack on the basic right to be yourself in public.
Some people think faith should be a private thing. But for many, it's something that should be part of everyday life. Wearing certain clothes, praying at specific times, or celebrating holidays in public are all ways people express their faith. These actions are not political. They are personal and meaningful.
When people are attacked for these expressions, it's not just about their beliefs. It's about their right to exist peacefully in public. The attack at Bondi Beach was an act of terrorism. It was an antisemitic attack, and it's important to call it what it is.
In a society where people feel they have to hide their faith, things become more fragile. Recent events show this clearly. There have been attacks on Muslim gatherings and a shooting at a church. These are all symptoms of the same problem: a growing intolerance that needs to be addressed.
During Hanukkah, Jewish people light candles. They are told to share this light with others. It's a symbol of faith overcoming fear. But after recent events, some might feel scared to do this. However, the tradition says they should not hide their light. They should put their menorahs in the window for everyone to see.
Instead of hiding or being vague, people should stand up for each other. They should affirm the right to practice faith openly. Pluralism is not about everyone being the same. It's about protecting differences.
People from different faiths can support each other. They can be a miracle for each other, protecting each individual light. In this spirit, they stand with Jewish people around the world. They call on others to do the same.
