Star Trek and Futurama fans might love this show

Long before streaming existed, sci-fi was split into two camps. One side dreamed of hopeful futures like Star Trek, where people solved problems together under the stars. The other side laughed at those same dreams through shows like Futurama, which pointed out how silly it was to believe humans would ever stop fighting over dumb things. Star Trek showed diversity on screen in 1966 when a Black officer, a Japanese helmsman, and a Russian navigator worked side by side on the same ship. That was radical for its time.
Decades later, another show did the opposite of Star Trek’s serious tone. Futurama took the same humor that made The Simpsons famous and moved it a thousand years ahead. Instead of exploring space peacefully, it mocked every cliché that Star Trek had created. Now the sci-fi world has both kinds of stories—some are serious like Dark and For All Mankind, while others make fun of the genre like The Boys and Rick and Morty. One show, though, finds a balance between both styles.
The Orville mixes Futurama’s jokes with Star Trek’s good intentions. When it started, many expected crude humor because the creator also made Family Guy. Instead, the show surprised people by being sincere and optimistic like Star Trek. It gently pokes fun at classic sci-fi moments while still believing in a better future. That same mix of hope helped during tough times in America, just like Star Trek did in the 1960s and The Orville did in the 2010s. It stood against shows like Black Mirror that made people feel anxious about what’s next.
The show’s journey hasn’t been smooth. After two seasons on Fox, it moved to Hulu when companies merged. Now fans wait for news about season four, though nothing has been confirmed. The show hasn’t been canceled, but it’s been quiet for years. Hulu could easily order more episodes since the show has loyal viewers, but there’s no update yet.
One reason might be the creator’s busy schedule. He still works on multiple animated series and new projects. Waiting for his availability could explain the delay. Until then, fans keep hoping for more adventures of the USS Orville.
