George Takei, famous for his role on Star Trek, spoke about the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ month‑long film series that celebrates space travel in movies. The event started on January 30 and ends February 28, showing titles such as Star Trek IV, The Right Stuff, Solaris, and Interstellar. A special screening of Contact on February 22 will feature actress Jodie Foster and astrophysicist Nivedita Mahesh.
Takei first appeared at the opening night of the series. He talked about working with Leonard Nimoy, who directed Star Trek IV. The two had already acted together for three seasons of the TV show and had been involved in earlier films. Takei said Nimoy was a careful director who listened to the cast and trusted their skills. He would give subtle suggestions like “look over there” or “think about this. ” Takei praised Nimoy’s sensitivity and diplomatic approach.
Later that year, Takei was a VIP on the “Space For Everyone” float at the Tournament of Roses Parade. He described how cold and wet it was, and how he had to hold a light plastic umbrella while greeting fans. The umbrella became heavy in the rain, and the float’s wooden throne was slippery. Takei joked that he nearly fell because the umbrella felt like fifteen pounds.
During the event, Takei shared his view on science fiction. He believes it is all about imagination and exploring new frontiers, whether in outer space or inside the human body. He mentioned a relative who studies medicine and will soon explore the mind and body at UCSF. Takei warned that while space is exciting, our own inner dangers can be just as destructive.
The museum’s series showcases films that push beyond Earth and imagine life among the stars. It offers a chance to revisit classic space stories and think about future adventures.
