State Education Gap: Why New York Falls Short

New York, USATue Jun 23 2026
In the United States, schools still differ a lot in what they give to students of different races. Even though laws banning school segregation were passed more than seventy years ago, the results show that students’ success and the resources they get are still uneven. A recent study by Brown University looked at how much money school districts receive. It found that districts with fewer Black and Hispanic students get about $900 to $1, 000 more per child than those that serve larger numbers of these groups. The researchers say this shows that past efforts to fix funding inequities have not closed the gap completely. WalletHub, a research firm that tracks social trends, added its own analysis. It compared all 50 states on six key measures: the share of adults who finished high school, the share with a college degree, standardized test scores, SAT and ACT averages, and graduation rates. The goal was to see which states offer the most equal opportunities for Black and white residents.
When all those factors were combined, New York ended up with a score of 31. 63 out of 100 and was ranked 44th overall, meaning it is the seventh‑worst state for racial equality in education. The state also has the fourth‑largest difference between white and Black adults who earned a bachelor’s degree. Only Colorado, New Jersey and Connecticut performed worse in that category. The top ten states for racial equality were Wyoming, West Virginia, New Mexico, Oregon, Kentucky, Vermont, Maine, North Dakota, Tennessee and Hawaii. At the other end, Wisconsin, Connecticut, New Jersey, Nebraska, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York, California, Massachusetts and South Carolina were the lowest‑ranked. WalletHub’s findings suggest that unequal funding can lead to gaps in test scores, graduation rates and later job prospects. The firm’s analysts argue that every district should receive enough money, modern technology, tutoring and extracurricular programs so that students from all backgrounds can succeed.
